Tru / Creation.... A Brief History

Aeonevents premier club night Wild Fruit is held at Tru nightclub Brighton (previously, Creation) , a 2000 capacity venue on 2 levels, with a balcony overlooking the dance floor, 6 bars, three distinct dance rooms, and a state of the art computerised light and laser system.

The venue where Tru is housed has a long history associated with Brighton. This venue itself dates back to 1867 when it was a concert hall. Becoming a skating rink in 1887 and converted to a cinema in 1901 then a restaurant in 1911. In 1918 it was the Coliseum picture Theatre and in 1919 it became a dance hall, taking the name Sherry's which became immortalised in the Graham Green book Brighton Rock'.

The front of the building was demolished 1969 and the interior redesigned as a dance hall based on the saloon of a Mississippi show boat. In the 80's Sherry's was legendary with the New Romantic fashion scene and had celebrity visitors such as Boy George, Steve Strange, Divine and Fad Gadget. Bolts' was the Sunday Gay night at that time with the explosion of High energy music with acts performing including Wham & the Weather Girls.

During the late eighties Sherry's' had a dreadful refit and became the Pink Coconut', the glamorous interior with its chandeliers, statuary and red velvet drapes disappeared to be replaced by gaudy neon and pink painted palm trees.

In 1991 the building became Paradox'. The excessive eighties interior was removed and whilst the venue was given a modern face lift some of Sherry's' original features including the sweeping staircase remained, it was during this incarnation that the venue hosted the first of many Wild Fruit parties.

In 2002 Paradox' became Creation'. The venue was transformed, gone was any reference to its previous incarnations and millions of pounds were spent to give the venue a thoroughly contemporary feel, however visitors to Wild Fruit may like to know that way above the modern arched ceiling a magnificent (if crumbling) plasterwork ceiling dating from the time of Sherry's' with its huge ceiling roses that housed the enormous crystal chandeliers still exists so those dancing on the main dance floor may well be unaware that they are still in a building of some considerable history of which they are a part !
