After selling out much of their UK comeback tour earlier this year, the full original line-up of the Happy Mondays will be bringing their classic Madchester sound to the seaside.
Sunday 26th May2, the band will be performing a full live show at the Brighton Centre with Hacienda and acid house legends 808 State Sound System providing the support.
The Happy Mondays are as much a part of iconic British music history as the now converted flats of the Hacienda. Swaggering their way have through the early years of acid house with a series of massive singles and albums, they have become symbolic of the crossover between dance music and indie. Forming in 1980 the bands original (and now back together) line up consisted of: Shaun Ryder on lead vocals, his brother Paul on bass, lead guitarist Mark Day, Paul Davis on keys and Gary Whelan on drums. Mark Bez Berry later joined the band onstage and added an additional twist of energy and percussion. Rowetta Satchel joined the band to provide backing vocals in the early 90s.
On Sunday 29 January 2012, Shaun Ryder exclusively announced on radio station Xfm that the band would return with the original and definitive lineup. After a sell out 13 date UK tour in May 2012, including shows at the Manchester Evening News Arena, London's Brixton Academy, plus other dates in Bournemouth, Glasgow, Dublin, Leeds, Sheffield and Nottingham. The band played gigs in Chile and Argentine in May along with a number of UK festivals in the summer, including the headlining slot at Camp Bestival in Dorset in July and T in the Park. Following the success of the tour, the band have announced a mini tour later this year, including the Brighton Centre this time.
The first official release from Happy Mondays was the 'Forty Five E.P., often called the 'Delightful E.P.' after its first track. It was released on Factory Records in September 1985. Manchester music impresario Tony Wilson discovered them at a battle of the bands contest held at his Hacienda nightclub.
By the early 90's, the Happy Mondays were an important part of the Manchester music scene and personified rave culture. Numerous world tours meant the band had international success, while maintaining their fanbase in their home country. The line-up of the band during this first and most important ten year phase never changed, and the six original members Shaun Ryder, Paul Ryder, Gary Whelan, Paul Davis, Mark Day and Mark 'Bez' Berry remained a tight unit until the first incarnation came to an end in 1994.
